In October 2010, Meta Health Technology sponsored the ICD-10 Planning and Implementation Survey conducted by AHIMA during the national convention in Orlando. Based on the responses, while facilities have made progress in preparing for ICD-10 since the 2008 baseline survey was conducted, much work still remains to be done. According to the nearly 1,000 survey respondents, only 30% reported having ICD-10 planning team meetings in progress, and 25% reported that they either hadn't thought about establishing a team or had no plans to establish one. Fortunately, of those that had created teams, 75% had HIM professionals participating on the ICD-10 committees, with nearly 57% of the HIM participants providing the leadership role on the committee.
Surprisingly, over 46% of the respondents had not yet consulted with their current information technology vendors regarding ICD-10 compatibility and impact. Clearly, there will be extensive assessment and review required for facilities to determine whether their many systems and vendors will be ready. With the deadline approaching, HIM professionals should be sure to get involved in this important process assessment before implementation. Ask yourself, “Have we spoken to our vendors yet regarding ICD-10 implementation?”
